The First Evangelical Methodist Church of Oakwood grew out of the merger of the United Brethren and Methodist Churches. Oakwood had both of these churches and United Brethren Church was forced to close. The congregation wanted to start their own church and meet in the old building. The church was given permission to use the building, but on the first Sunday they were to meet, the building was found padlocked. The new District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church had ordered that the building be locked. The building was eventually torn down.
Heart broken, but not defeated, the church began meeting in the old hardware store. On the 27th of October 1968, the church joined the Evangelical Methodist Church Demonination. In July of 1970, ground was broken on the site of our current building. September 1, 2018, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary as a church.
The mission of Oakwood EMC is to love God, to love others, and to magnify the name of Jesus Christ. The vision of our church is to glorify our God and Savior, Jesus Christ, to make true disciples throughout all the nations by means of missionary activity and support, to minister the ordinances, to edify believers, and to do all that is sovereignly possible and biblically permissible
to magnify the name of Jesus.
